Forget about the Dyson Vacuum cleaners, the best type of household vacuum cleaner is made by Sebo - a german company!
I use one of their professional models, the BS36 Comfort as do most other Carpet Cleaners.

Some people might not like that these upright vacuums use 'bags' to collect the dirt. This might be considered an ongoing inconvenience and cost.
